Bariatric Surgery is a surgical procedure applied to people whose Body Mass Index is within the limits of obesity and morbid obesity in order to lose weight and to get rid of obesity and obesity-related health problems.
The procedures used in obesity surgery vary according to the patient's condition and needs. They are mainly various surgeries performed with the aim of "Reducing the Amount of Food Taken" and "Reducing the Absorption of Food Taken". Today, all procedures are performed in the form of laparoscopic surgery. There are some general conditions for the use of surgical procedures in the treatment of obesity.
Presence of Morbid Obesity, which is, having a Body Mass Index of 40 kg/m² and above
Body Mass Index is above 35 kg/m² and one or more co-morbidity related to obesity (such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Fatty Liver, Joint Diseases, Shortness of Breath and Sleep Apnea)
Body Mass Index over 30 kg/m² and presence of uncontrolled diabetes
Even if they meet these conditions, patients who cannot be performed any of the obesity surgery procedures are:
Those with advanced heart failure
Those who have had a heart attack in the last 1 year
Active cancer cases and those who undergoing cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy
Those with Liver Cirrhosis
Those with alcohol or substance abuse
Those who have any other health problem that prevents them from receiving anesthesia
Those who have psychological problems or are not ready for surgery psychologically
The age range of people who can undergo obesity surgery is between the ages of 18 and 65.Although it can be applied to under-18s and over-65s when it is very necessary, it can cause some problems for patients. If the decision of obesity surgery under the age of 18 has been taken, the operation must be performed by an experienced surgeon and performed after the necessary consultations.
